US domestic truck tonnage was down 0.4 per cent in June compared with the previous month following a revised increase of 0.4 per cent in May, the American Trucking Associations' (ATA) advanced seasonally adjusted For-Hire Truck Tonnage Index shows.
The index in June equalled 113.8, up 7.8 compared with the same month last year and the 7.4 per cent year-on-year growth rate registered in May, and lower than April's 9.9 per cent year-on-year increase, reported American Shipper.
The April growth came after two months of sequential declines and represented the largest year-on-year increase in the index since October 2017.
In the first half of the year domestic truck volumes were up 7.9 per cent year on year and double the annual growth rate of 3.8 per cent recorded throughout the whole of 2017.
ATA economist Bob Costello said tonnage in the second quarter of 2018 grew 1.8 per cent compared with the first quarter and 8.4 per cent compared to the same quarter in 2017.
"I expect the growth in tonnage to moderate, but remain at very high levels in the months ahead," said Mr Costello.
